Abstract Larry Sanger There must be tens of millions of intellectuals online worldwide. Amazing things are possible with such a huge concentration of intellectual power enabled to collaborate. Wikipedia is the most successful demonstration of this, but its community is beset with deep problems that are probably unsolvable. This makes urgent the question what changes are needed to produce a truly exemplary free encyclopedia. Among other things, this talk will present the conditions that explain Wikipedia's success, and proposes a few further conditions that it has not met and likely will never meet. I am proposing a *brand new* encyclopedia project, announced for the first time to this panel, that will meet all of the success conditions. One key element of the new project will not be revealed until the talk itself, and will, I think, prove to be very exciting to all Wikipedia-watchers.
