Launch of Creative Commons Germany Friday, 11 June 2004, 20:00, Track 1 Creative Commons is a non-profit organisation in the area of intellectual property law. It seeks to respond to the growing need for an alternative that offers a viable middle ground between stringent copyright controls on the one hand and the completely unfettered use of content on the other. In a nutshell, CC seeks to get away from the notion of 'all rights reserved' towards 'some rights reserved'. To this purpose, it offers a set of user-friendly copyright licenses that authors, musicians and other creators of artistic content can use to protect some of their ownership rights, while giving others away. The system thus makes content more widely available and has at the same time significant benefits for creators who wish to ensure greater distribution of their works. The licenses have a modular structure and can be designed to fit individual purposes.
